Born in France in 1974, Jean-Gabriel Périot directed several short movies and develops his own editing style with archive footage. Most of his works, documentaries as fiction, deal with violence and history. His short works, including Dies Irae, Eût-elle été criminelle…, Nijuman no borei (200000 fantômes) and The Devil were shown in numerous festivals and honored by many awards.

A German Youth, his first documentary feature film, opened the Panorama section of the Berlinale 2015, was released in France, Germany and Switzerland and received many prizes in festivals. Natsu no hikari (Summer Lights), his first fiction feature film, was premiered in the San Sebastian film festival 2016 and shown in festivals before its release in French cinemas in 2017. Our Defeats was premiered in the Forum of the Berlinale 2019. Returning to Reims [Fragment] was selected at the Directors’ Fortnights in Cannes 2021. The film was released in 2022 and won the César for Best Documentary in 2023. His latest film, Facing Darkness, had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and will be released in France in February 2024.
