Pierre Clément was one of René Vautier’s loyal comrades-in-arms. After studying at IDHEC, he traveled to Tunis in 1957 with René to film Independent Tunisia. He joined the FLN’s film team and shot Sakiet Sidi Youcef in 1958. That same October, he was arrested by the French army on Algerian soil and narrowly escaped summary execution. His camera and film reels were seized and never returned. Sentenced to 10 years in prison for threatening the external security of the State, he was granted amnesty in October 1962. He later worked in Algeria helping train new filmmakers, and went on to be director of photography on many of René Vautier’s films, including To Be Twenty in the Aurès.
