I wonder: can one be a professional "video amateur"? Surely, if someone makes a comfortable living from what they do—whatever it may be—they become a professional. Until that happens, I’ll simply be a "video amateur". And I suggest this label, this strange title, because it’s what I’ve been given at some of the events I’ve participated in: ever since the Reina Sofía’s “Cinema and Almost Cinema” program selected me for one of its events and labeled me, without asking, in this way.
I am a "video amateur". This label carries the critical and ridiculous tone of someone just starting out, and seeing it on the museum's facade, on a huge advertising banner, seemed to me as absurd as life itself. And even though I know marketing is essential in this society to sell oneself, and that I won’t convince many with this label, it helps me work without the pressure of being an "artist", a "director", or a "producer".
