Virginia García del Pino (Barcelona, 1966) forms part of the “new Spanish arthouse cinema”. As well as working as a director, she also lectures in the master's course on documentary film at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. After completing a B.A. in art, her work as a video artist introduced her to the documentary genre. Her films, of resounding formal simplicity, arise from an attempt to understand human behaviour and in doing so, her films float between optimism and a disturbingly tragic background. Her work has been shown extensively on the international stage at festivals and in museums, galleries and centres of contemporary art. In 2008 she won a number of awards for Lo que tú dices que soy [What you say I am]. Her first feature film, El Jurado [The Jury] (2012) was part of the official section at FID Marseilles, FIC Valdivia and Punto de Vista and was included in the “Unfinished Stories” season at the Reina Sofía Museum of Art in Madrid. She contributed a chapter to the book “Territorios y Fronteras. Experiencias documentales contemporáneas” ["Territories and Frontiers. Contemporary documentary experiences"], published by the University of the Basque Country. In 2013, retrospectives of her work were held at the Márgenes and L'Alternativa festivals. In 2014, the Cineuropa film festival devoted a focus to her work. She has been a jury member at the Mar de Plata, Seville, L'Alternativa and In-Edit festivals. In recent years, she has given workshops and lectures throughout Spain. Her latest last film, La 10ª carta [The Tenth Letter] (2014), which premiered at the San Sebastian Festival, is a portrait of the established film-maker Basilio Martín Patino. It has been nominated for the José María Forqué prizes and will be released next May in Los Angeles as part of the programme “L.A. OLA“. Filmography Basilio Martín Patino.
